Everything You Need To Know About Fuel Transfer Equipment

For over 60 years, Fill-Rite has been building industry leading fuel transfer equipment, widely known for its rugged durability and reliable performance. Season after season. Year after year.

When choosing a Fill-Rite pump, it's important to consider factors like flow rate, power source, application, and more.

Our pumps come in a variety of different sizes and styles to suit your individual needs, so you can rest assured that you found the right pump for the job.

Watch our brief overview video to learn more about the most important factors you should consider when purchasing your next (or first) fuel transfer system:
Now that you’ve watched our overview video, you probably have a better idea of what kind pump you need for your job. In case you still need more information, we’ll break it down for you a bit more here:
Picking a Pump with the Right Performance Level (Flow Rate)
  • Flow rate is measured in gallons per minute (GPM) or liters per minute (LPM)
  • It’s easiest to think about flow rate as time—how much time do you want to spend waiting while filling up your vehicle or equipment?
  • Fill-Rite typically recommends sizing a pump so that you don’t have to wait more than 2-4 minutes to fill your equipment. Here is helpful breakdown to guide your decision making:
  • Max Fuel Tank Size Recommendations:
Reommended Fill-Rite Pump Flow Rate 2 Minutes Spent Refueling Your Equipment 4 Minutes Spent Refueling Your Equipment
    8 GPM16 Gallons 32 Gallons
    15 GPM30 Gallons 60 Gallons
    20 GPM40 Gallons 80 Gallons
    25 GPM50 Gallons 100 Gallons
    35 GPM70 Gallons 140+ Gallons
Now that you’ve identified the right performance level, let’s talk about power sources. There are three options when it comes to power sources: DC, AC, or Hand-Operated.

Your choice will be dependent on the type of application you have— mobile or stationary.

Mobile Applications / DC-Powered Electric Pumps
  • Mobile Applications – when pumps are mounted on transfer tanks in the back of pickup trucks or on towable fuel trailers
  • Power Sources – since trucks and trailers already have batteries on board, mobile Fill-Rite pumps just connect directly to the 12V or 24V batteries powering the electronics in your vehicle
  • Fill-Rite’s Offering – 12V and 24V DC-powered pumps with flow rates between 8–25 GPM, allowing you to refuel everything from skid loaders to bulldozers
  • Common Uses – Anywhere that mobile refueling is needed such as construction (residential, commercial, road, highway, bridge), agriculture (farm trucks), remote logging or oil and gas sites
Stationary Applications / AC-Powered Electric Pumps
  • Stationary Applications – when pumps are mounted on large, aboveground storage tanks that remain in a set location for an extended period of time
  • Power Sources – AC electric wiring is ran from a nearby building or meter to provide constant power to the pumps
  • Fill-Rite’s Offering – 115V and 230V AC-powered pumps with flow rates between 15–35 GPM, allowing you to efficiently refuel everything from pickup trucks to combines
  • Common Uses – Any permanent site with a large fleet of vehicles or equipment such as agriculture, construction, mining, logging, oil and gas drilling sites, municipalities, transportation and fleets
Hand Powered Pumps (No Electricity Needed)
  • Cost Effective – more cost effective than electric-powered fuel transfer pumps
  • Faster Installation – Install and go, no need to hook up power to the pump
  • Perfect for Homeowners and Recreation – great for filling small equipment like mowers, ATV’s, UTV’s, and personal watercraft
Once you’ve selected your desired performance level (flow rate) and power source, you can consider adding Fill-Rite accessories that will make your refueling experience easier.

Overview of Fill-Rite Accessories and Why They’re Useful

Fill-Rite Meters - Learn more at Fill-Rite Meters
Fuel is expensive and often the #1 or #2 expense category for fleets. Meters allow you to track fuel usage across your business, assisting record keeping and expense tracking.
Fill-Rite Nozzles - Learn more at Fill-Rite Automatic Nozzles
Deliver the same experience you are used to at the service station or truck stop with features like automatic shut-off and hold-open latches, so you don’t have to hold the nozzle the whole time you’re refueling.
Fill-Rite Hoses - Learn more at Fill-Rite Additional Hoses
If your equipment is too tall to reach with a hose offered in your package, you can couple several hoses together to reach your desired length.
Fill-Rite Filters - Learn more at Fill-Rite Filters
Your vehicles and equipment are expensive, so Fill-Rite filters remove water and particulates before they contaminate or cause damage.
Fill-Rite Swivels - Learn more at Fill-Rite Swivels
Allow for extra mobility and maneuverability, giving you 360-degree range of motion with the nozzle.
Fill-Rite Breakaways - Learn more at Fill-Rite Hose Breakaways
Ever seen someone drive away with a service station nozzle in their vehicle still? That’s what hose breakaways are for–they prevent further damage and leakage if someone drives away with the nozzle in their vehicle.
